Chapter 15

The next day I’m more well rested than I’ve been in as long as I can remember. The bed is so comfortable that I did not wake once, which is unsurprising since I’ve been accustomed to sleeping on the ground. I stretch my arms over my head lazily before everything from yesterday crashes into my mind. I’m half dreading, half eagerly awaiting the necessary talk I will have with the king. I’m sure it’ll be awkward, but Alexei is right; I’m excited to hear about how my parents met and to learn more about my birth mother.

I get up and take another shower because I can. I don’t wash my hair since I did so last night, but I lather my body up in the jasmine-smelling soap and let the hot water work out any tension in my muscles. I wish I had my purse with me so that I could put on a little makeup, but I have no idea where our things are.

When I get out of the shower and put my robe back on, I see containers on the counter. Intrigued, I open them only to find exactly what I was looking for. It’s not my makeup, but fuck it, it’s better than nothing. I keep it minimal and natural, but it does wonders for making me feel more like myself.

Just as I start freaking out about the fact that I don’t have anything appropriate for a visit with the king, there’s a knock on my door, and Humphrey is on the other side holding a dress.

“Miss Ember,” he says, bowing to me. “The king asked me to bring this for you. He’s under the impression that since you’ve been traveling, you do not have any clean clothes.”

I take the dress from him, smiling.

“Thank you so much, Humphrey. He is right. I have no clean clothes. And the clothes I do have are for traveling. Nothing fit for a palace.”

“I will make sure to bring you some more, Miss Ember. Also, the king has requested that you join him for breakfast when you are finished getting ready.”

I take a deep breath as nerves flutter in my stomach.

“Yes, that will be fine. Can you notify him that I would like Alexei to be there too?” I don’t know what protocol is for this, but I want to meet with him on my terms as much as possible. And I wasn’t lying last night; I want Alexei there to support me in this.

“I will let him know. Would you like me to tell Mister Alexei as well?”

“If you wouldn’t mind, that would be wonderful.” I smile gratefully at him.

“I don’t mind at all. I’ll come to escort you after I’ve talked to both of them. Will that be sufficient time for you to finish getting ready?”

“Yes. Thank you so much, Humphrey.” He bows again before heading toward Alexei’s room.

I close the door and look at the dress he brought for me. It’s simple, but elegant. It’s floor-length and
